Herbs and spices do more than just give food a great flavour, they also contain a number of compounds that are beneficial for health.
Here’s some of my favourites and why they’re good for you.
1. Turmeric
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin which gives it it’s bright yellow colour. This compound has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, with some research suggesting it can relieve pain associated with arthritis. Other studies have shown a range of benefits for turmeric and curcumin and epidemiologists hypothesise that turmeric, which is a part of the daily diet in India, may explain the low rate of Alzheimer’s disease in that country. You can use turmeric in a range of dishes, it’s traditionally used in curries but you can try it sprinkled on roasted chickpeas, sprinkled on top of meat and fish and a range of other dishes. You can also make tumeric tea – find the recipe here.
2. Cinnamon
Cinnamon is more than just a tasty topping on a cappuccino. Studies have found a particular type of cinnamon, cassia cinnamon can lower blood sugar in diabetics. Other studies have found cinnamon may be useful in lowering cholesterol and treating yeast infections, but the results from these are not conclusive. My favourite use for cinnamon is sprinkled on top of my oats. You can also add it to yoghurt, use in cooking or try some stirred through your coffee for a flavour boost. Read more about it here.
3. Ginger
Ginger is well known for it’s ability to relieve nausea. It can also help reduce bloating and relieve heart burn. Use in stir fries, certain curries and you can also make ginger tea.
Poppy
I love putting a bit of cinnamon in my coffee in the morning. The turmeric tea sounds interesting… wonder what it would taste like. Might give it a go.
