We all want glowing, vibrant skin, but it can seem so elusive. How do you get that gorgeous glow? It’s a combination of good nutrition, lifestyle and skin care products. I wrote this post over at nzgirl, but I thought I’d share it here too as who doesn’t want gorgeous skin?! Here’s a few tips to get you on your way to gorgeous, glowing skin.
What you put inside is just as important as what goes on the outside when it comes to skin. Eating lots of vegetables and some fruit is important as they provide antioxidants to help fight free radicals that damage skin. Vegetables and fruit also provide vitamins C, E, and A, all which help nourish skin. It’s not just this that helps keep your skin glowing either. Carotenoids, which are found in orange and red vegetables, can change the tone of your skin and contribute to more attractive looking skin.
As well as lots of vegetables, make sure the rest of your diet is healthy and balanced to ensure not only good skin health but overall health too.
2. Make sure you get your omega 3 fats
Omega 3 fatty acids are responsible for the health of the cell membrane and it’s the cell membrane that influences the cells ability to hold water. So nice healthy cell membranes = healthier hydrated skin cells. This equates to softer, smoother looking skin. You’ll find your omega 3 fats in oily fish like salmon and sardines as well as other seafood. They’re also found in walnuts, chia seeds and linseeds. If you’re not a big fish eater, you can also take an omega 3 supplement.
3. Exfoliate away dead skin cells
Regular exfoliation is key for glowing skin. It removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin to reveal the new, healthy skin cells below, and will also allow your moisturiser to penetrate the skin for more. Some exfoliants are harsh and scratch the skin, so it’s important to get one that will remove dead skin cells without damaging the skin.
One product I’d recommend is Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant. This product contains Lactic and Hydroxy Acid which provides non-abrasive exfoliation. This removes dead skin cells that make your skin look dull and also to helps stimulate cell renewal.
Best news is this was $98 and it’s now reduced to $68 as a part of Dermalogica’s Skin Savers! They’ve dropped the prices of their products by an average of 23%. That’s a great saving. The reason behind the price drop is to encourage customers to buy products from authorised Dermalogica skin centres and websites like this to ensure you get an authentic and safe product as well as expert advice from the skin care experts.
4. Go Smokefree
Smoking isn’t just bad for your health, it’s damaging to your skin as well. Smoking produces carbon monoxide which steals oxygen from your body – including your skin, so it’s left looking dull and sallow. Another reason to give up the ciggies. If you’d like help to quit contact Quitline for a free support service and low cost Nicotine Replacement Therapy.
5. Add a serum to your skin care routine
A good quality serum can really boost your skin health. One I’ve tried myself is Dermalogica Multivitamin power serum. It contains micro-encapsulated vitamins A, C and E which penetrate deep into skin, helping to decrease fine lines and reduce age spots. You can read my review of it here. Try it for yourself at Dermalogica for $125
6. Get moving!
Physical activity boosts blood flow, meaning more oxygen nutrients are transported through the blood to our cells. This includes our skin cells. Regular exercise means your skin gets well nourished and oxygenated, giving you a lovely glow. Aim to be active at least five days a week for 30 minutes or more.
7. Great make up
Finally, if you’ve got all the basics right, then enhance your natural glow with the perfect make up. Here’s a five step routine for glowing skin from makeup.com. Zoe Foster also has some great tips for getting good skin in her book Amazing Face. Avoid heavy make up – you want your natural glow to shine through!
