Julia is one of the lovely sisters from the duo that write the gorgeous nutrition and wellness blog Julia and Libby. Julia was based in Auckland but is now in Sydney studying Nutritional Medicine. I am thankful to have had the opportunity grab the busy Julia to ask a few questions about her wellness routine, nourishing food and others. I’m sure you’ll enjoy getting to know her as much as I did.

We love to know what other healthy people eat! – What is a typical day’s eating for you?
Mornings I will have a green smoothie with pea protein, quinoa porridge or gluten free bread with avocado and marmite. This is when I also take my supplements – Good Green Stuff (www.nuzest.com), B Vitamins, Probiotics, Magnesium, Flaxseed Oil and herbs.
Lunch is usually something from the Uni café, so a salad, lentil pattie, raw energy salad or something with chickpeas. Throughout the day I’ll snack on veges with hummus, fruit, nuts and seeds, herbal teas or any sugar free treats that I have stashed in the fridge. Dinner is usually a big salad with grains or legumes. At the moment I am loving fried banana which I make with cinnamon and coconut oil. The perfect sweet treat for after dinner.
What foods are your fridge and pantry staples?
Bananas, kale, spinach, lemons, coconut water, co-yo, raw cacao, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, sparkling water, cacao nibs, quinoa, lots of dried herbs and spices.
What is your favourite way to keep fit?
Walking in the sunshine, bikram yoga, running.
Favourite healthy meal?
A big raw salad with a lemon, sesame oil, garlic, olive oil dressing.
Favourite food indulgence ?
Anything chocolate! Little Bird Organics raw macaroons are my absolute favourite. Living in Sydney I can’t get my hands on them so whenever family come and visit me they bring a supply.
Do you have a “food philosophy” that you aim to follow?
Eat food as it comes in nature – as close as possible to its natural state. I don’t follow any kind of diet as such and prefer to stick with eating wholefoods.
Many girls/woman struggle with maintaining a healthy body image. What do you think is key in having a healthy body image and learning to love who you are?
This was a hard one for me to answer as I know first hand how hard it can be to love and accept your body. When I was younger I really struggled with how I looked and it’s only in the past few years that I have come to accept most of my flaws. For example I used to loathe being the tall one out of my girlfriends but now I love it.
Young girls are constantly faced with images of what the ideal woman should look like so of course we are going to compare ourselves with others and wish we could change certain parts of our bodies. We all have insecurities and there are going to be things about ourselves that we don’t absolutely love so if you are having a bad body image day try to focus on the positives. What do you love about yourself? Accept and appreciate your differences as they are what make you special. We are all unique and what you may not like about yourself someone out there is going to love.
What are your top 3 tips for staying healthy and happy?
Vitamin D –The feeling of sun on your face and seeing blue sky is pure bliss! Roll on Summer.
Sleep – 8 hours is the minimum for me. I try to get to bed before 10pm and wake around 6am.
Eat foods that nourish you – I really struggle to get my head around how people can day after day eat processed packaged refined food. Once in a while yes, totally fine, we are all human and who doesn’t love hot chips, but constantly eating food that has no nutritional value is doing absolutely nothing for your mental or physical wellbeing. We are made up of billions and billions of cells, they need proper nutrition in order for us to survive and thrive. The human body is incredible and it works day in and day out for us so it deserves to be treated with respect. Plus, when you eat wholefoods you feel better, look better and have a lot more energy.
