Monday is generally the least favourite day in the week for most. I have to admit that I often get a case of the Sunday night blues, wallowing in thoughts of how much more I wanted to do in the weekend but I didn’t have the time. However, I decided a while ago it was time to change my attitude and start the week off with a kick, rather than on a downer, especially as I do really love my job (I just love the weekend too!). Here’s five things that I’ve been doing to make Monday a better day.
1. Start the day with a relaxing routine
Instead of hitting the snooze button in the morning, I’m making the effort to get up, and start the day with plenty of time. I get up first, put the jug on and enjoy a relaxing hot drink. Then I’ve still got plenty of time to do everything without stressing so it’s a nice relaxing start to the day.
2. Have something to look forward to on a Monday
If Monday’s not your most favourite day – schedule something that you can look forward to. It could be a lunch date with a friend, a Monday night movie night or one of my favourite Monday treats is to buy a coffee on the way to work. It just makes Monday feel a little more special to have a yummy latte to start the day with. I also play hockey some Monday nights (otherwise it’s Sunday) and that is something that makes me excited for Monday.
3. Write down some things you want to focus on for the week ahead
Monday is a fresh week, a fresh start to focus on the things you want to achieve. On Sunday night, I write a list of things I want to achieve for the week. It makes me feel invigorated and focused for the week ahead. This week, it’s to go for a mid week longish run (I’ve been sick with a cough for nearly two weeks so no running!), clear out my home office and to work on my e-programme for Eat Well NZ.
4. Make a schedule for the week
If Monday makes you feel overwhelmed with what you’ve got to achieve, schedule it out. While a to do list is useful, it’s only the first step. Make a time in your schedule to get stuff done. That way, you don’t overcommit yourself and end up with a giant list you can’t get through. I’ve just started doing this – don’t know why I didn’t think about it earlier! It makes your days much more productive.
5. Be positive
Start the week with a positive attitude. Complement people, smile, remember what you’re grateful for. A positive Monday paves the way for a positive week.
Do you get the Sunday blues? What’s your favourite things about Monday?
